Best Mt Fuji One Day Tour from Tokyo

Best Mt Fuji One Day Tour from Tokyo

A common question that I receive from people planning to travel to Japan is a request for assistance to find the best day tour option to visit Mt Fuji.  There are a large number of options available, and while you can also visit Mt Fuji independently, a tour provides a great option to check out the area without having to work out the multitude of bus and train options for yourself.

Below I have detailed the best rated tours to Mt Fuji, with options including the Hakone Region and to Lake Kawaguchi in the Five Lakes region.  I also have separate sections with further information on the best family friendly tours, wheelchair accessible tours, private tours and Muslim friendly one day tours to Mt Fuji.

Where are Mt Fuji, Hakone, Five Lakes and Lake Kawaguchi from Tokyo?

Mt Fuji is located 137km / 85 mi to the west of Tokyo, and can be seen in the distance on clear days.

As Mt Fuji has a perfect circular volcanic cone it can be viewed from all directions, however for day tours from Tokyo there are two main areas on the eastern side of the mountain which are typically visited, Hakone and Lake Kawaguchi in the Five Lakes Area.  Both areas can provide spectacular views of Mt Fuji.  Hakone is situated to the south eastern side of Mt Fuji and is approximately 15-20km / 10-12 mi from the mountain.

Lake Kawaguchi in the Five Lakes area is situated approximately 15km / 10 mi to the north of Mt Fuji, with Lake Kawaguchi (or Kawaguchiko) being the main area visited by tours from Tokyo.  In addition, from Lake Kawaguchi it is a short distance to the Mt Fuji 5th Station, which is the starting point for visitors wanting to climb to the top of Mt Fuji.

Road Traffic Around Mt Fuji

A key point is that the roads between Tokyo and Mt Fuji can get very busy with traffic, particularly in peak times, so factor that into your expectations when planning your day tour.  If a tour offers the option to return by Shinkansen then that can often be a faster method to return to Tokyo at the end of the day.

When is the Best Time to See Mt Fuji?

Note that Mt Fuji is often covered by cloud which may limit viewing opportunities.  When planning your visit to Mt Fuji monitor the weather forecast, and in particular the cloud factor.  If the clouds are forecast to be more than 30% the chances of seeing Mt Fuji are less likely – although even on a cloudy day you can have breaks in the weather!
