Best Social Media Scheduler Tools for Bloggers for 2019

Best Social Media Scheduler Tools

As you get into blogging you quickly realise that you need to have a social media presence, and when you get started you are usually not earning much income, so in the early days you are on the scrounge for the best free social media scheduler you can find. As your business income grows your budget to pay for a social media scheduler tool grows, so you have more options to consider with an aim to get maximum return on investment for your time invested.

The aim of this article is to help you better understand the best social media scheduler tool to suit your business.

You may ask what are my credentials to write this article?  I have been running the Pretraveller travel blog for 8 years now, of which the first six years were on a hobby basis, and in more recent times I have grown the blog into a business.  My time is limited but I now have more budget available, so tools which I could not previously justify are now affordable.  As part of deciding which tool to invest in I have decided to write this article to help other find the right social media scheduler tool to suit them.

Best Free Social Media Post Scheduler Tool

Buffer Review

I have used Buffer extensively for the past year so wanted to provide my Buffer review to help you better understand what these tools are able to offer to bloggers and other users.

My go to free tool which I recommend to others to use when getting started with social media post scheduling is the Buffer free plan.  Buffer enables you to schedule social media posts to:

  • Facebook Pages and Groups
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • Linked In Pages and Profiles
  • Google+ Pages and Profiles

Buffer for Social Media

I have personally used the Buffer Free plan to schedule posts to my Facebook Groups and Pages, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest, and it is a very easy to use tool which enables you to quickly share the same content across multiple social media channels.

Buffer works on the premise of pre-setting your social media sharing times for each channel, and you then create a queue of content to share at those times.  The Buffer free plan enables you to easily schedule up to 10 pieces of content across up to 3 social media channels.

You can quickly work your way through the setup for each channel for a single piece of content, including adding photos and updating the text to be shared.  Once your content is ready you can then either choose to ‘Add to Queue’, ‘Share Next’, ‘Share Now’ or ‘Schedule Post’.

After content has been added you can select the queue for each social media to confirm what is there.  There are also options to shuffle your content in the queue, which will shuffle all content which has not been fixed to a specific schedule date.

Buffer Bulk Social Media Upload

Another feature of free Buffer is the ability to Bulk Upload your content through the Bulk Buffer tool.  You can easily create a csv file in a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel which you can then use over and over again to input your next round of content.  I ended up creating multiple csv files, one for my own content and several for the content that I have curated from other sources.  Managing my social media was as easy as uploading those csv files, shuffling the content, deciding whether to schedule my own content and then letting it run.

The challenge is that you quickly find that 10 pieces of content is not enough, and I can definitely recommend upgrading to the Buffer Starter Pro plan (previously called the Buffer Awesome Plan) for $US15 per month (with a discount if you sign up for a full year upfront).  It provides the same features, however increases your plan to enable you to schedule up to 100 pieces of content per channel across up to 8 social accounts!  With the Pro plan I have been able to schedule my content sharing so that I only have to update the system every couple of weeks, which is a big time saver.

Buffer Apps

Another great feature of Buffer is that they have a range of Buffer apps as follows:

  • Buffer for Chrome, which enables you to quickly share content to Buffer
  • Buffer for Mac, which enables you to quickly share content to Buffer
  • Buffer for Android, which enables you to quickly share content to Buffer and track your performance metrics
  • Buffer for iOS, including iPad and iPhone, which enables you to quickly share content to Buffer and track your performance metrics

These Buffer apps make it even easier to curate content and also track your metrics, and is a great feature of this tool.

Buffer for Agencies

Many bloggers go on to start social media agencies and sell services to clients.  In this case, Buffer for agencies provides a great option to expand the scope of your social media business.

With Buffer business, you can progressively build your social media services to be able to handle up to 150 social accounts, and up to 2000 scheduled posts per account!  A key feature of buffer for agencies is the ability to add other users to your account with different permission levels.

Buffer Alternatives

Where the challenge comes in is that you still need to manually spend time every couple of weeks setting up your queue of posts again.  And I personally have felt like this process is the same work over and over again.  This is where you may not realise that there are some more advanced (and more expensive) social media scheduler tools which are Buffer alternatives which enable you to set up once and essentially forget, once you have your system and content to a level of maturity.

Hootsuite Gratis or Hootsuite Free Plan

Another great free option to get started with social media scheduling is the Hootsuite App.  Hootsuite has very similar features to Buffer, and the Hootsuite free alternative will enable you to connect up to three social media channels, including Facebook Pages and Groups, Instagram, Google+ pages and profiles, Linked in Profiles and Company Pages, Youtube and Twitter, and easily schedule up to 30 pieces of content.

If you decide to upgrade to the Hootsuite Pro Plan the Hootsuite pricing is that you will pay $US59 per month (with a discount to $US39 per month if you pay for the full year up front) which increases your plan to enable you to connect up to 10 social profiles with an unlimited number of content that you can autoschedule.  Hootsuite also includes bulk scheduling and you can also upload from RSS feeds and includes an allowance to boost or promote your articles through each social media account.

Hootsuite Enterprise Plans

Hootsuite Business and Enterprise plans provide great options to develop your social media services business.  With Hootsuite Team and Business plans, you can progressively build your social media services to be able to handle up to 35 social accounts, and an unlimited number of scheduled posts per account!  Hootsuite Enterprise enables you to tailor your plans to suit your needs.

Hootsuite Alternatives

Where the challenge comes in is that you still need to manually spend time to manually set up your queue of posts.  And I personally have felt like this process is the same work over and over again.  This is where you may not realise that there are some more advanced (and more expensive) social media scheduler tool which are Buffer alternatives and Hootsuite competitors which enable you to set up once and essentially forget, once you have your system and content to a level of maturity.

Best Advanced Social Media Scheduler Tools

Now that I have the budget available to be able to afford an advanced social media scheduler tool, I have run an extensive trial to compare the main two tools on offer.  I have used the Meet Edgar free trial and the Smarter Queue free trial as a competition to decide which tool will get my business for the longer term.

As you usually have to invest more time and effort to get any of these tools up and running, you want to ensure you are making a good decision up front before making that longer term commitment.

Below is a comparison of the major features of each tool:

Meet Edgar pricing is simple, with a single price to get started.  You will pay $US49 per month which includes:

  • Includes 25 social media accounts
  • Unlimited queued posts

Meet Edgar Free Trial

Meet Edgar does not provide a free trial.  Instead they provide a 30 day money back guarantee – note that this means that they will take payment as soon as you join, and if you decide you do not want to continue using the tool they will provide a refund on request.

Smarter Queue Pricing

Smarter Queue Free Trial

Smarter Queue provides a 14 day free trial, with no credit card required to register and commence the trial.  At the end of the trial period the account will cease sending out posts until you make payment – but you do not lose the work you have already set up.

Smarter Queue Pricing

Smarter Queue provides different pricing and feature levels which make it an easier option to get started on a smaller budget.  One of the things I really like is the ability to sign up to a basic plan and then add on the specific features you want, rather than having to upgrade to the next level plans which may have features you do not need.  Below is a summary of the different plans available from Smarter Queue.

Solo Plan $US19.99 per month

Meet Edgar Review

After using Meet Edgar for a couple of weeks my conclusion is that Meet Edgar is a very good social media scheduling app, and is definitely a step above both Buffer and Hootsuite in terms of its functionality and the ability to recycle content.

Smarter Queue was very easy to bulk upload all of my content from csv files, set up categories, allocate and then set up the posting schedule.  Click go and it worked very smoothly!

For me, the only features which were not as good was the analytics package – you had to click on each individual post to get the analytics for clicks etc which was painful.  Also the price point was higher than Smarter Queue with no options.

Smarter Queue Review

After using Smarter Queue for a couple of weeks my conclusion is that Smarter queue is an excellent social media scheduling tool, and is definitely a step above both Buffer and Hootsuite in terms of its functionality and ability to recycle content.

Meet Edgar was very easy to bulk upload all of my content from csv files, set up categories, allocate and then set up the posting schedule.  Click go and it worked very smoothly!

The analytics package is very easy to read and see impressions, click throughs, shares and likes at a glance.

Also, the pricing is cheaper than Meet Edgar and I love the options to add specific features as you need them.  I have already had to purchase additional posts which worked out to be an extra $US2 per month to increase my capacity from 1000 to 2500 per month.  You can also increase the number of social profiles up to 100 if you wish…

Best Social Media Scheduler Tool

After conducting a trial of both Meet Edgar and Smarter Queue, I have made the decision that Smarter Queue is my preferred option to move forward in my blogging business.

Key features which differentiated Smarter Queue were the analytics options being much easier to use, and also that the pricing is cheaper and modular.

I therefore recommend to you that if you are looking for the best social media scheduler that you also chose Smarter Queue to grow your business.

Click here to check out Smarter Queue further – and if you sign up using my referral link you will get a double length free trial of 30 days instead of 14 days.

Happy scheduling!

Thanks Anne.

  • Nice list of tools here. I use Social Oomph for the travel group on Facebook because it is simple, easy and seamless. Find the right tool for your needs, and you’ll save time and energy. Do you have a Twitter sharing button Anne? Didn’t find it.

    • Ryan, thank you for your feedback. I had a look at Social Oomph and it looks like a good alternative for Buffer and Hootsuite, however it does not appear to be able to recycle the content on a category basis which is the key features of both Meet Edgar and Smarter Queue.
