Review: Arigato Japan Food Tours Online Cocktail Making Experience

In a world currently dominated by COVID-19, many of us are looking for alternative fun experiences which we can do from home, which has resulted in many new opportunities to do virtual classes and experiences.  One of our favourite tour companies, Arigato Japan Food Tours, with whom we have done several tours during our recent visit to Japan, are now offering a great selection of virtual experiences which you can do from home.

We were recently invited to attend the new Arigato Online Happy Hour – where we had the fun opportunity to learn more about how to make Japanese style cocktails!  After confirming our intent to attend, we were sent our booking confirmation and also a shopping list of cocktail ingredients and equipment to have ready.  Of note is that you can choose to make either alcoholic or non-alcoholic versions of each cocktail to suit your tastes.  You can also easily book into this one hour cocktail workshop online with Arigato Japan Tours.

If you are the type of person who would type ‘cocktail classes near me’ into Google Search, make sure you also look for online cocktail courses as they can be done from anywhere in the world from home – no driving home required! 😊

Preparing for Our Japanese Cocktail Making Experience

I had fun browsing for ingredients at our local bottle shop, and may have picked up a few extra bottles which caught my eye – a few different kinds of sake to try later!

I put everything in the refrigerator to chill down, chopped up the required ingredients and we were ready to get started.  My top tip is before the session starts, ensure you place all of your ingredients in a cooler to have all of your items close at hand, including glassware, cocktail shakers etc.

We also prepared our lounge room so that we could watch on our big screen TV.  The virtual sessions are conducted using Zoom, so I signed into the session on my phone and then connected with our Chromecast on our TV to transmit the video to our TV.  It all worked much easier than I expected!  And we were quickly ready to get started with our online cocktail course.

Our Online Cocktail Course Experience with Arigato Japan Food Tours

Our Zoom session started on schedule, and we were happy to see Lauren Shannon again, our host from one of our previous tours in Japan.  Lauren was well set up in her at home bar and ready to show us some great cocktails!  Two other people also separately joined the session, so it was great to do the introductions and learn a bit more about each other before getting started.

Lauren started by giving us an overview of the session, cocktail making equipment and the two cocktails were we going to make together.

Our first cocktail was a Sayonara Sakura or champagne cocktail.  Some of the ingredients we had to substitute as they were not readily available in Australia, but after following the recipe together and having fun shaking it up, the result was a delicious cocktail which we both enjoyed.  We also learned a lot more about other types of champagne cocktails which was very interesting, we never knew how many champagne based cocktail recipe options we could experiment with!

Our second cocktail was a Ginger-Gin Genmai Tonic – so quite different in style to the first cocktail.  We have not previously been gin drinkers before, so you will be pleased to note that you can also use vodka to substitute in this cocktail.  We followed the recipe together, had fun putting all of the ingredients together and then stirring them together.  The result was a lovely refreshing drink – with a real zing from the ginger!

Cocktail Making Class Wrap Up

It was lovely to sit in our own lounge room and experience making cocktails at home with an expert to lead us through the process and having other like minded folk to chat with along the way.  We also enjoyed nibbling on Japanese inspired seaweed snacks, and having a relaxed evening together.  A great option for date night!  After our online happy hour Lauren also sent us copies of the cocktail recipes, including other cocktail making resources so we can make them again in future.
