About the Ngong Ping 360 Hong Kong

If you want to have a short break from the intensity of central Hong Kong, experience the Ngong Ping 360 cable car and you will be rewarded with spectacular views when the skies are clear on the 25-minute trip to Ngong Ping village. At the end of your journey, you can then also visit the Tian Tan Big Buddha, one of Hong Kong’s most popular attractions.

If you have an extended layover at Hong Kong Airport, we would also recommend a short trip to Ngong Ping 360 and the Big Buddha rather than remaining stuck in an airport. If you’re thinking of getting out of the airport for a bit, Hong Kong Airport to Ngong Ping (Tung Chung Terminus) takes about 10 minutes by taxi.

Allow for some time queuing to get on the cable car, but you can save yourself both time as well as money shopping online and buying Klook Ngong Ping tickets. The journey to the top takes about 25 minutes then allow yourself about 90 minutes to look around when you get to the top, and another 25 minutes to get back down to Tung Chung and a further 10 minutes to get back to the airport. This should roughly take a little under 3 hours, but I would allow 4 hours to give yourself a bit of a buffer.

Ngong Ping 360 Review

The Ngong Ping cable car is one of the world’s most amazing cable car experiences. The cable car connects Tung Chung to Ngong Ping. On our journey, we were rewarded with stunning panoramic vistas of land, sky and sea. As we started our journey, looking back, we got a great view over the town of Tung Chung.

Looking down and to the sides, we saw Tung Chung Bay and the Shan Tau wetlands. Our boys were fascinated looking through the floor of the Crystal Cabin. We felt that the small extra cost for the Crystal Cabin was definitely worth it for the superior views it offered (unless you get nervous looking through a glass floor).

When we reached the first station, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car line took a sharp left turn towards North Lantau, and we started to enjoy views over Lantau North Country Park.

On our left, we got a fabulous view over Tung Chung and the cable car line.

On our right, we saw the vast size of Hong Kong International Airport and the South China Sea.

Also, on the right, we found it particularly interesting to witness the scale of the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau Bridge which was still under construction during our visit, but is now fully open.

We were fascinated by the design which involves a large bridge section diving down to a large undersea tunnel which then resurfaces to connect with a bridge section on the other side. Here’s a link to an interesting article about the bridge project. As we continued our journey to Ngong Ping, we had the opportunity to watch people on the hiking trails up to Ngong Ping and were excited to catch our first glimpse of the Big Buddha.

Just as we approached the Ngong Ping cable car terminal, we also enjoyed seeing cows chilling out through the clear glass floor of our Crystal Cabin.

We really couldn’t have asked for better weather both on the trip to Ngong Ping and the return journey to Tung Chung.

Once we arrived at the Ngong Ping 360 terminus, we walked through Ngong Ping village. From Ngong Ping village, it took us about 10 to 15 minutes to arrive at the Big Buddha. We entered the monastery area through a stone triple-white archway called the Mountain Gate. We then walked along a path flanked by the Twelve Divine Generals. At the end of this path, you can either go straight ahead to the Po Lin Monastery or go right and climb the 260 steps to the Big Buddha.

How to Purchase Ngong Ping 360 Tickets

There are a number of different ways to purchase Ngong Ping 360 tickets. My top tip is to book your tickets through an online provider such as Klook, KKDay, Get Your Guide or Viator. Buying tickets online in advance will save you money and enable you to skip the queue (unless you happen to enjoy standing in a queue for ages).

Ngong Ping 360 Price

The first reason to book your tickets online is that you will save money on the normal Ngong Ping 360 price. I’ve compared the Ngong Ping cable car price for booking tickets directly through the Ngong Ping 360 site versus buying through Klook for several different ticket options. Klook has a regular Ngong Ping 360 ticket promotion and for most ticket types, you will save between 14 to 29 percent on the normal Ngong Ping 360 ticket price when buying through them. The exception to this is a 1 + 1 standard and crystal round trip which is currently being promoted on the Ngong Ping 360 site. For this particular option, you will only save about 6% when buying through Klook.

Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car Price Comparison

Another option that is worth checking out if you have a little more time is to also include a visit to the famous Tai O Fishing Village. Tai O Fishing Village is located on the western side of Lantau Island. While the village is on the coast, it has a mountain backdrop and is known for its traditional stilt houses which were a common feature of old Southern Chinese fishing villages.

Save Time by Booking through Klook

The other big benefit of buying through Klook is that you can bypass the sometimes very long queues, as there is an exclusive Klook lane at the Ngong Ping 360. When we went up the Ngong Ping 360 cable car near the opening time, the general queue wasn’t too bad, but we still saved a fair bit of time using the dedicated Klook lane.

When we returned to the Tung Chung terminal at about noon, the general queue was massive, while the exclusive Klook lane was still quite small. Here’s a photo that will give you some idea of the general queues vs the Klook queue. Unfortunately, the photo doesn’t capture the full extent of the normal queue, as the rest of the line is out of the picture.

Another top tip to save time is to book the Crystal Cabin. The crystal cabin is only marginally more expensive than the standard cabin and not only offers superior views, but you will also save time as the queues are quite a bit shorter than the queues for the standard cabin.

When booking your tickets through Klook, you will also be offered the opportunity for a couple of add-ons, including meal coupons at any one of the participating restaurants and VR 360 admission, which offers six VR adventures and games.

Other Ticket Purchase Options

Our least recommended option to purchase Ngong Ping 360 tickets is to buy your tickets from the ticket offices at either the Tung Chung or Ngong Ping terminals. I don’t recommend this option as it is the most expensive and you are also likely to experience long queues depending on the time of your visit.

You can also book tickets in advance at either 7-11 convenience stores (except for the Tung Chung and Ngong Ping stores) or book directly through the Ngong Ping 360 website. The benefit of this option is that you can bypass buying tickets when at the Ngong Ping 360.

Ngong Ping Village and Ngong Ping 360 opening hours

Ngong Ping opening hours are the same for both the cable car and Ngong Ping Village. From Monday to Friday, the Ngong Ping 360 and the village operate from 10am to 6pm. The Ngong Ping Village and Ngong Ping cable car opening hours on weekends and public holidays are from 9:00am to 6:30pm.

How to Get to Ngong Ping 360

The following section gives you the best ways to get to Ngong Ping 360 Tung Chung terminus from both central Hong Kong and the Hong Kong International Airport.

Central Hong Kong to Ngong Ping 360 Tung Chung Terminus

There are various options to travel from Hong Kong to Tung Chung to catch the Ngong Ping 360 to Ngong Ping Village.

By MTR

The MTR is the easiest and cheapest option to get to the Tung Chung terminus. The MTR (or Mass Transit Railway) is a major network of both heavy and light rail, based around an 11-line rapid transit network connecting most major locations in Hong Kong. We found it a great way to move around Hong Kong as stations were everywhere, the trains ran on time and were very frequent.

From a station such as East Tsim Sha Tsui Station on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong, use the West Rail Line and change trains at Nam Cheong Station onto the Tung Chun Line. The total journey time is about 30 minutes. From Hong Kong Island, catch the Tung Chung line from Hong Kong Station. The total journey time is also about 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Tung Chung Station, the Ngong Ping 360 is just a short walk away.

If you want to use the MTR rail system to travel around Hong Kong, I recommend purchasing either an Octopus card or an MTR pass. Both an MTR Day Pass and 72-hour Unlimited MTR Travel Passes are available. The 72-hour MTR card also includes a one-way trip on the Hong Kong Airport Express.

The advantage of the Octopus card is that it can also be used for all buses, trams, trains and ferries, while the MTR day pass can be used only on the train system. The Octopus card is a tap-on tap-off public transport card that comes with an initial credit and can be topped up at locations such as 7-11. With this option, you pay for every ride. The advantage of the MTR day passes are that they can be used for unlimited MTR rides within the validity period. The time period is calculated from the first use of the card.

By Bus to Nong Ping (Tung Chung Terminus)

There are various bus options to get to Tung Chung detailed on the Ngong Ping 360 site, but generally, they won’t be as quick or efficient as using the MTR. An Octopus card can also be used for bus journeys.

Another good bus option that will be more comfortable and relaxed than public transport is to use a shared bus transfer from Kowloon to Ngong Ping 360 through Klook. By Taxi or Car

A taxi or car journey will normally take 30 to 40 minutes to get to Tung Chung. Using a taxi will be much more expensive than using the MTR.

Hong Kong International Airport to Ngong Ping 360 Tung Chung Terminus

The two main options to get to the Ngong Ping 360 from Hong Kong International Airport to Ngong Ping 360 are using a bus or catching a taxi.

By Bus

Catch the S1, S56, S64 or S64x bus. The journey should take around 10 minutes. The bus station is next to the Ngong Ping 360 Tung Chung terminal.

By Taxi

From the airport, catch a Blue Lantau taxi to the Tung Chung Terminus of the Ngong Ping 360. The journey should take about 1o minutes.
