Why Should You Buy a Sim Card for Your Visit to Singapore?

While there are many options to access free wifi in Singapore, we have found that buying a local sim card or renting a pocket wifi an essential item while travelling, to enable us to easily access information on the go, as well as to stay in touch with friends and family using social media.  Advantages of buying a sim card or renting a pocket wifi include the following:

  • Easy access to Google Maps to enable ease of travel through complicated public transport systems. On our recent trip to Singapore I was constantly using Google Maps to get around and keep track of where we were to ensure we hopped off at the right stop.
  • Planning each day out, both the night before and while on the go. Several times we decided to change out original plans and it was great to be able to quickly look up hawker market and other food options while out and about.
  • Making bookings on the go for tickets and tours.

A great advantage of a sim card or pocket wifi is that once you have completed your initial log in or activation process, there is nothing more to do to stay connected.  And your sim card will last as long as the battery in your phone lasts!  If you rely on free wifi options you have to constantly find and log into new wifi networks, and there is always the issue of the level of security of each network.  With your own sim card or pocket wifi you can use data with confidence that you are very low risk to be hacked.

Why Buy a Tourist Sim Card for Singapore?

Purchasing a Singapore sim card for tourists is a great option to be connected at an affordable price during your visit to Singapore.  In Singapore you can get a Singapore travel sim card which is valid for 7 days, and includes both local and international voice calls, SMS messages and a very attractive data package at blindingly fast Singapore data speeds.

The network upload and download speed in Singapore is awesome compared with our home country of Australia and many other countries we have visited and is available at a very cheap price – a lot cheaper than the typical ‘day pass’ options offered by our normal network operator.

We were amazed that we were able to purchase the Starhub tourist sim card for only $US 8 for 7 days of access – that is less cost than a single day international day pass from my normal network provider!  And if you are staying in Singapore for longer than 7 days there are options to top up your card through the Starhub Prepaid app.

Another great part of purchasing a pre-paid sim card is at the end of your trip you do not need to return it, you just remove it from your phone and throw it away – so very easy!

What is Included in the Starhub Singapore Tourist Sim Card?

StarHub is one of the best Singapore tourist sim card options available and includes the following features over a 7 day period:

  • StarHub Travel SIM card (standard/micro/nano size)
  • 100GB local data
  • 1GB roaming data (available in 17 destinations)
  • 30 minutes international calls
  • 500 minutes local outgoing calls
  • Unlimited incoming calls
  • 100 local SMS messages

When you receive your Starhub Sim Card, it is a very small package wrapped in plastic.  On the back is a sticker with details of your phone number, which you will need during the activation process.

When you open the package you will find the activation instructions, a sim card removal tool, a very handy plastic pouch to store both sim cards and the sim card removal tool and the sim card itself, which includes the option for three different sim card sizes (standard, nano and micro).

How to Buy a Starhub Travel Sim Card for Singapore

We ordered the Starhub tourist sim card through Klook for collection at Changi Airport in Singapore.  The ordering process was very easy, we regularly personally use Klook to order travel tickets, tours, sim cards and pocket wifi rental for Asian countries, and they had a great range of options when we were planning our visit to Singapore.  Click here to check out our review article for Klook.

Klook provides an easy option to buy a 7 day Starhub travel sim card online for collection at Changi Airport.  After we arrived the collection process was very easy.  After clearing customs and collecting our luggage, we went to the UOB Currency Exchange Counter in the public arrival area in Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 and with our passport and booking voucher were able to easily pick up the sim card package before taking our comfortable private airport transfer to our hotel.

You can also purchase the Starhub Tourist Sim Card at local convenience stores, however we found the Klook option very cost effective and easy to collect on arrival at Changi Airport.

Our Experience with the Starhub Prepaid Tourist Sim Card

We used our Starhub travel sim card throughout our recent 3.5 day visit to Singapore and found it worked really well and enabled us to stay connected while on the go.  We used it both in my smart phone as well as to tether other devices including my laptop computer and other family mobile devices and it continued to work well with no signs of struggling with the load.  We were very impressed.

The activation process was relatively simple.  From the point of installing the Starhub sim card into my Android smart phone, data access was almost immediate once I had gone through the activation process, which included installing the Starhub Prepaid app and setting up the APN on my phone as detailed in the activation instructions.

The second step was to activate the voice calling options.  To do this you follow the app directions and it is very quick and easy to complete.

Once both of these steps are completed your phone should be fully functional and you can get started with enjoying your visit to Singapore!  You can easily use the Starhub prepaid app to keep track of your data and call usage.

And if you are staying in Singapore for longer than 7 days there are options to top up your card through the Starhub Prepaid app.
